Trip to The National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships
As winners of Sandwell Schools Indoor Rowing League on Tuesday 16th March 2010 we travelled by coach to Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park, London to participate in The National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC), the biggest junior event of its kind in the world.
Forty seven of our students from Years 7 – 12’s participated. Every student took part in: an Individual Event ( 2 minutes for Year 7’s, 3 minutes for Year 8’s, right up to
6 minutes for Year 11’s, with Year 12’s having to row 2000 metres in the fastest time); either the Sprint Relay ( 2000 metres, teams of 4 - we entered three boys’ teams and five girls’ teams from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10), or the Boat Race ( 6780 metres, teams of 8 - as only Years 10, 11, 1 2 and 13 were eligible we entered one boys and one girls’ team).
Many of the top teams were rowing clubs that had entered or schools that either, rowed on water as well as trained and/or competed in indoor rowing competitions or had teams made up of students who rowed for their local rowing clubs. Some teams had International rowers. Indeed, a new British Record was recorded by Sebastian Adams, a Year 7at Royal Liberty School when he rowed 580m in just two minutes.
BHTC may not have broken any British records or won any medals, but in my book – they were all winners and should be congratulated on their performances, enthusiasm and impeccable behaviour on the day.
Professional photos (some of our students) and all results are all up on the London Youth Rowing website: http://www.londonyouthrowing.com/events/njirc/previous-years/njirc-2010-results but notable performances were from Alex Bruce and Ella Beard in Year 11 who were 24th and 25th respectively and Lamar Mc Intosh in Year 10 who was 37th.
The whole event was filmed by BBC Sportsround, so we might be on the telly! It will be featured on the Friday show on Boat Race weekend - Friday 2nd April - 6:30pm so don’t forget to look out for any of our students.
